A person can only tolerate so much sweet tea before the fundamental fabric of their being begins to unravel. So should you find yourself looking for a good cup of coffee, you’ll need to know where to go. Here are the absolute best coffee shops in Raleigh.
Best Coffee in Raleigh
The best coffee shops in Raleigh, you ask? Imagine places where baristas craft beverages with the precision of alchemists, transforming ordinary beans into elixirs of pure bliss. Picture yourself surrounded by warm, inviting interiors, where the air is infused with the tantalizing fragrance of freshly brewed coffee.
Black and White Coffee
327 W Davie St, Raleigh, NC 27601

At Black & White Coffee, at Videri Chocolate Factory, the air is filled with the smell of chocolate! This coffee shop is located within the Videri Chocolate Factory. They have a full espresso menu featuring drinks made with Black and White Coffee Roasters beans, and some with Videri chocolate! There are a few tables in the cafe as well as a large patio. This is definitely one of my favorite Raleigh coffee shops.
Black & White also has a location at RDU airport and locations in neighboring communities.
Try:
- A mocha made with Videri chocolate syrup.
Jubala
2100 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27607

Jubala is an inviting and cozy local coffee shop chain serving breakfast and lunch daily. They have a full espresso menu featuring house-roasted beans along with some very good specialty drinks. Choose from lightly sweet biscuits, crispy Liege waffles, or a variety of sandwiches to pair with your beverage. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating but it fills up quickly.
Jubala has several additional locations around Raleigh that are equally fantastic.
Try:
- The Miele latte paired with a biscuit.
The Left Hook
927 W Morgan St, Raleigh, NC 27603

The Left Hook Coffee is a coffee counter inside Gussie’s. Look for a full filter and espresso menu featuring house-roasted beans and house-made syrups. There are a few tables inside and on the sidewalk patio where you can enjoy your drink. Whether their coffee holds the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe remains to be seen, but it is, at the very least, a pleasant beverage.
Try:
- A cortado, or go wild with a b.b.l. (quad shot espresso, brown sugar vanilla syrup, milk, iced).
Lucky Tree
3801 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27607

Check out Lucky Tree, a local coffee shop with local art on display and for sale. Expect friendly service and a fun vibe. They offer a variety of oatmeals and snacks, as well as mead, beer, cider, and a full espresso menu with some unique signature drinks.
Try:
- A simple Americano or luxurious vanilla maple latte.
The Optimist
1000 Brookside Dr STE 109, Raleigh, NC 27604

With its velvet banquets and plethora of plants, The Optimist strikes a perfect balance between light and bright and cozy and moody. In addition to a full espresso and hot beverage menu, this is great place for breakfast or lunch and they have wine and beer too! Between the indoor space and the front and hidden back patios, there is plenty of seating, including small laptop tables. There’s also a children’s play area.
The Optimist has additional locations in other parts of Raleigh too.
Try:
- Cappuccino paired with an English Muffin.
Pine State Coffee
1614 Automotive Way, Raleigh, NC 27604

Pine State Coffee is a local coffee shop with a full espresso menu featuring beans roasted in-house. They also have beer and pastries from various local bakeries. They share the space with Runology, a local running shop, making this one of the most unique coffee shops in Raleigh. And the outdoor patio offers endless seating options.
Try:
- A cappuccino, or whatever you find yourself in the mood for.
Willow House
1004 S Saunders St, Raleigh, NC 27603

Willow House boasts a surplus of space, a quality not often associated with high quality coffee shops, and it is located within spitting distance of Dorothea Dix Park (though one hopes no one is actually spitting). Should you find yourself needing a place to work, or perhaps simply a cozy corner in which to engage in conversation, Willow House may be just the place. Furthermore, and this is not a claim made lightly, the coffee is, by all reasonable standards, delicious. Whether this will significantly improve the overall trajectory of your day is, naturally, a question best left unanswered.
Try:
- The Salty Southerner Latte.
