Forget trendy bars with artisanal cocktails and head instead to the dive bars of Raleigh where you’ll always find the faint aroma of spilled beer and questionable sanitation. Surround yourself with a slightly unsettling slice of humanity illuminated only by the flickering neon of a forgotten beer sign. The conversations you’ll overhear will likely be as incomprehensible as the life choices that led you there. These bastions of budget booze and dubious decor are not for the faint of heart, or the easily disconcerted. But if you seek a place where there are no give-a-damns given, a dive bar in Raleigh can offer a strange and intoxicating solace.
Keep in mind that if you’re looking for a place with decidedly douchey dudes and decent drinks where you might get drugged, you’ll have to look elsewhere and expect to spend more. These are the cheap and unpretentious dive bars of Raleigh:
The Bison Bar
815 E Whitaker Mill Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608
The Bison is a low key dive bar decorated with buffalo nickels and dollar bills. Entertain yourself with a pool table, pinball, multiple TVs, and super cheap drink specials. The patrons are a cast of misfits and down-on-their-luck souls brought together by a shared appreciation for cheap liquor and a healthy disregard for social norms.
The Cardinal Bar
713 N West St, Raleigh, NC 27603, United States

The Cardinal is a not-so-classy joint offering canned beer and rotating taps. Enjoy a (not free) hotdog with a game of pinball or post up on the patio for some questionable conversation.
Johnson Street Yacht Club
710 W Johnson St, Raleigh, NC 27603

Johnson Street Yacht Club is a dive bar with a rooftop patio, TVs, and a “hella fast” slide. No joke. With it’s beachy theme and rooftop patio, this is probably the most unique of all the dive bars in Raleigh. And if you don’t visit the bar, do yourself a favor and at least visit the website.
The Goat
RIP. The goat shut its doors in August of 2024 after the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement officers raided the bar, ticketing two bartenders and five underage patrons, a true testament to its dive bar status.
KINGS
14 W Martin St, Raleigh, NC 27601
Kings is a funky club and bar with a large stage, acoustically designed ‘floating’ walls, and a stunning steel and pine bar. Get down to funky music enjoying the fantastic sound system, laugh the night away at stand-up comedy, or test your skills at game show nights.
Landmark Tavern
117 E Hargett St, Raleigh, NC 27601
Landmark is an old-school tavern that traffics in good cheer and libations. Find a bounty of craft beers, wines, and spirits of every ilk, served from an antique wood bar. And there’s also patio seating out back but be careful of the unidentified flying cockroaches.
Lucky B’s
609 Tucker St, Raleigh, NC 27603

Lucky B’s offers a delightful mishmash of amusements. Look for sports on the TV, games of skill and chance, and a jukebox (the fancy kind where you can take selfies too). This is one of the most popular Raleigh dive bars among the youthful crowd. Ask for a Prohibition Special and grab a seat on the huge patio or join a game of beer pong.
Mitch’s Tavern
2426 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27607

Mitch’s is a nostalgic NC State tavern with a wood-accented interior and Wolfpack decor. Go for comfort classics like hearty soups, stacked sandwiches, and your favorite beers and cocktails: stay for the school spirit and sticky surfaces.
Neptunes Parlour
14 W Martin St, Raleigh, NC 27601
Neptunes is a late-night basement lounge offering local brews and cocktails, alongside pinball machines, comedy, and DJ shows. Tread carefully, for this is an experience not for the conventional soul.
The Night Rider
416 W South St, Raleigh, NC 27601
The Night Rider defies categorization. It’s a neighborhood dive bar, small live music venue, quirky queer honky tonk, and karaoke joint, so prepare yourself for an unexpected good time.
Player’s Retreat
105 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27605

Player’s Retreat, or PR as it’s known locally, is a historic NC State sports bar boasting a wide selection of American classics and an impressive collection of single-malt scotches.
The Pour House Music Hall & Record Shop
224 S Blount St, Raleigh, NC 27601
The Pour House is a music venue for regional and touring acts with capacity for 500 people spread out over two floors. Look also for a bar with dozens of actually good craft beers on tap and a little beer spilled on your dress too.
Ruby Deluxe
RIP. Ruby shut its doors in May of 2025. Ruby Deluxe was a haven for queer revelry with live music, burlesque, and drag performances that would leave you breathless.
Slim’s
227 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27601
Slim’s is an intimate Rock N’ Roll venue and bar with a patio out back. Head upstairs for some chill time or to play pool and try not to touch anything.
The Ugly Monkey Party Bar
400 W Morgan St, Raleigh, NC 27601

The Ugly Monkey is a dimly lit but cheerful den of revelry. Get in the cage to dance on the pole or climb the steps to dance on the bar. Spin the wheel to chose your shot, or join in on a karaoke or open mic night.
The Wicked Witch
416 W South St, Raleigh, NC 27601
The Wicked Witch is a haven for those who revel in the unconventional. Expect regular goth and kink dance parties, live music, and performances that are anything but mundane.
Woody’s
205 Wolfe St, Raleigh, NC 27601

Woody’s is your neighborhood go-to! This established watering hole offers a wide selection of food and drinks, a solid craft beer list, plenty of TVs for sports fans, and live music for a fun weekend atmosphere.
